United Airlines Grounds Entire Boeing 757 Fleet

UPDATE 10:00PM ET: A United Airlines spokesman tells NYCAviation that a total of 25 flights were canceled today and that all checks are expected to be complete within the next 12 to 24 hours. Affected passengers are being re-accommodated on spare aircraft when possible, as well as on other United flights and flights on other airlines.

UPDATE 7:24PM ET: WSJ reports that the fleet will be grounded Tuesday into Wednesday as United examines earlier modifications to the planes’ air-data computers.

UPDATE 6:48PM ET: CNBC reporting on Twitter that all 96 of United’s 757-200 jets have been removed from service for “unscheduled maintenance.”

United Airlines has grounded its entire fleet of Boeing 757 jets, according to various reports.

It is unclear what issue has instigated the grounding, but one United employee told KOLOTV.com that it was related to a software glitch. Initial reports indicate that United voluntarily took the planes out of service and was not ordered to by the FAA.

United currently operates 158 Boeing 757-200 aircraft. United operates 96 Boeing 757-200 aircraft. Continental Airlines, with which United is in the process of merging, operates 62 757s which are not affected.
