Thank you for this, Manny, this plane is a bucket list item for me. After seeing how much the original paint had faded, I was wondering if they were going to restore it. Once its finished I will get my a** out there to be with and photograph Jumbo Jet #1.

Yeah, I saw it last about two years ago and it is SAD the state of the planes out on the yard in that section of the museum. I am glad to hear they will be covering it all up as part of the expansion.

It was great to see the Museum of Flight when I was in Seattle last year, but I've got to agree, the planes in the yard are in need of some TLC. I'm really glad to hear they're getting around to working on the 747 and can only hope they can do the same to the 727 and 737 they've got out there as well!

..and the Concorde as well. They are also so tightly packed that they are very hard to photograph cleanly, if at all.

Agreed... I don't even think an UWA lens would let us get a clean shot of any of those jets. There's either going to be another wing/tail or some form of GSE in the way no matter what angle. Unfortunately the angles will likely get even worse once they finally get the area covered, though at least then the jets will be out of the elements.
On the plus side, their Concorde (and the VC-137B) are in passable cosmetic shape. The same can't be said for the other Boeing jets or the Connie in the back.

If anybody has a chance, I recommend reading 747 by Joe Sutter. As you know, Sutter was in charge of the design and development of the 747. Great read.
