Here is my sketch of the incident. Red is the wrong turn, and blue is the turn the heavies usually make after landing at SXM.
A few things I don't understand about this incident. Why such an early turn, when usually 747s turn much closer to the end of the runway. Also, what kind of jet blast damages 17 cars when engines should be virtually idle at this point. I mean, a right turn would have done as much damage with other a/c and the fire station in the vicinity.
When a heavy turns at that point in the runway, they have to make a very sharp turn from a stop. To get the aircraft moving requires a large amount of thrust, certainly not idle power. I watched a Delta A330 make a similar turn slightly further down the runway in March of last year and it sent a huge sandstorm into the residential neighbourhood. The Controller came on the radio and told Delta that they had turned the wrong way and that the Tower was going to get phobne calls. The Delta pilot apologized and told the Controller to say it was United
