    Working at jfk

Hey I was wondering if someone could help me obtain information about working at the airport. I went there today, and was met mostly with no's from swissport and other work contractors at the airport. My friend's and I (16-15) would like to obtain positions at the airport but we do not know what we could do. If we have a permit, I heard we could work as a AA gate agent? or a wheelchair escort for aviation safeguards? Much help is appreciated.

P.S. while visiting swissport human resources, saw the eos airlines office

From what I know, since you said you were 16 and your friend 15, the ground handling services will only hire 18+ because of driving experience and in NY, you are not allowed to work around machinery under 18. But gate agents, I don't know.

Gate agents have to be 18 too.

Didn't want to speak too soon. Most jobs like being a CSA and things that people make a living doing, you need to be 18 to do. If you want to work at an airport, go talk to the guys at the FBO at your local airport.

Thats what I attempted to do today when I visited the airport. Went to swissport (no) lsg skychefs (no) aviation safteyguard (said I could be a wheelchair escort) and some other companies that I do not recall the name of, God thank the free service road shuttle/airtrain! But I do see where you are coming from. The main reason I want a job at the airport is due to the fact I absolutely love the feeling of just being there, just immersed in all of the hustle and bustle and the large planes rolling past that I would work anywhere in the airport as long as I get to be near planes/tarmac/that area. At this point I'm still planning on attending school for business administration and going into the aviation industry and I'd kill to do anything at the airport.

If I can't get a job, I'll just have to put up with standing on top of the parking structure gazing out onto the tarmac for 2 more years :)

This is also most likely not going to happen, but is there ANY possibility of working with the dreaded, hated TSA? One time in my life it would be so rewarding to say "you've been selected for additional screening" as I have been asked to do so many times before.

I hope EMS doen't see this..I'm sure he wants ppl working for his angecy that really want to work there ;) LOL

If your at JFK stop by the GA building, in the waiting room as you walk in they have copies of the Airport press that has help wanted ads for jobs at JFK. Might be worth a look.

In the US terminal at LGA McDonald's and some of the other food vendors have high school age people working their, and there is constant employee turnover, meaning they are always hiring, and usually understaffed because of this. This might be a way to go at JFK, just pursue one past security. May not be very glamouros but if you work inside security you would at least have good window view access on your break or even before or after your shift. It would also give you the oppurtunity to meet the kind of people who could offer you a more desirable job for when u turn 18, especially if you are working a register.

One thing to keep in mind, even if their where gate agent positions for 16 years olds these are not summer jobs, they are year round permament postions so you would still be expected to work your shift when school starts in the fall. Let's say you got a nice part time shift from 400PM - 900PM after school, some nights delayed flights might keep you on duty till 12-2AM, they would not care if you had school in the morning. Not sure if you where aware of this? Not trying to discourage you, just trying to make you aware of the realities of these jobs, it's not all glamour, trust me.

    Good Luck

LGA777, in New York, it is illegal to work more than 4 hours a day when school is in session. That would probably also disqualify you.

Become an engineer and work for an aerospace company, you'll see and do plenty, we could use all the help we can get.

You could work for tsa as soon as you turn 18, and its pretty easy to get a job with them. In my opinion its the best entry level job at the airport because you get paid the most out of all the entry jobs out there and have access to everything even the ramp depending on which terminal you work at. You can apply at usajobs.gov. The only down side I guess is that you dont get to fly for free like you would if you got an airline job, but you can always make friends with some airline personnel and maybe they'll give u pass or two. Also you could work part time for tsa and part time for an airlinw they do allow that, but that would prob be too much since you are going to school. Also if you ever want to get into working for the government its a very good stepping stone.
