Stuart, good luck with your medical issues. You may want to look at an osteopath (DO) as opposed to a chiropractor. DOs are actual doctors as opposed to chiropractors.
My brother happens to be the foremost authority on manipulation. He was the associate chairman for the NY College of Osteopathic medicine and former president of the AOA (similar to the AMA). He has a private practice in Syosset.
He has helped me out greatly as I have had a few back issues (fractured vertebrae, torn ligaments and tendons).

Chiropractors study wellness, MD's and DO's study pathologies.
All of the above receive doctoral degrees.
