Same here. I was very lucky with the timing of the arrival. The original Monday date was a no go as i was out of town. The Wed date was also no good as I had two meetings in work that morning!!
Since it arrived at JFK I wanting to go over there but kept putting it off. Saturday I drove my wife into Manhattan (originally to be Forest Hills but that's another story, LOL) then made my way at a relaxed pace from the Upper East Side to JFK with a brief stop at Broad Channel to stretch my legs and use the Porto Potty which is in danger of either tipping over or to be consumed by the sand!!
Now we wait for its trip to the Intrepid. Hopefully that isnt done in the middle of the night either.
When is the SCA going to depart?
if anyone here is on flickr, add "nasa hq photo" as a contact to see thier pix of the demate of enterprise.
and any of you guys that are coming out for the Enterprise move to the intrepid, you're going have a few opportunities as it will take up to 3 days for the move to happen. Enterprise will be headed to New Jersey first where it will be transfered to another barge and then on to Intrepid this according to the guys at NASA.
Here are a few from this morning..........it was well worth it staying out to the wee hours of the morning.

Did they lift the shuttle and then pull the SCA out from under it?
Matt......they lifted the shuttle up enough so that it cleared the SCA and then they pushed back the SCA. Then they lowered her to the flatbed cradle. They did not lower the landing gear. Eric videoed it.......it was a long night/morning.
They can't lower the landing gear as it will make the shuttle to tall to fit under one of the bridges they will be traveling under by barge
Here are a few more. FYI - According to one of the NASA workers, when the orbiter gets moved and placed on a barge it will be going to New Jersey, once in NJ it will get transfered to another barge with a crane before it makes it way to the Intrepid.

Stellar shots Mark! Do we know when OV101 will start her Hudson trip?
Not really sure, but there are rumblings of the 1st week of June (I heard the 6th, but unconfirmed). Also, unconfirmed and rumblings is that the SCA may depart on Friday (they need to bring the flight crew, etc.). I honestly wouldn't hang on hat on any of this stuff, considering that they detached the shuttle this morning. Weather is a key factor.
Eyewitness New states on their website:"The next step will come June 6th, when the Enterprise is moved onto a tugboat and carried around New York Harbor to the Intrepid".
Based on the above, I have a feeling it will be moving out of JFK earlier.
Hoping it's any day OTHER than Friday.. not liking missing all of this stuff!!
Great shots of the removal. I gave up at midnight. Just too tired. As of yesterday's schedule SCA 905 is scheduled to depart sometime on Friday. They are waiting on the flight crew that are on different assignments right now
how do you put a youtube video up? I used to be able to do it.
In the quick reply box, there is a button, second from the right, "Insert Video". Copy the youtube URL and paste it int hat dialog box.
nope, no problems. Even the NASA guys came up to chat. there were people up and down all nigh and a few diehards that made it to the wee hours of the morning. One scary moment though, a van had either slowed down or stopped in the North bound lane to view the shuttle and was rear ended at high speed by Taxi. The taxi was totaled. I think every one was ok though.
Mark and Eric, GREAT job on both the photos and video !!
AND seeing it done at night with ALL the spotlights on the Shuttle
makes it even MORE impressive in my opinion !!
BTW, where was Derf ???? He couldn't have asked for a better NIGHT SHOOT !!! Ha !!
I think Derf was operating the crane :)
Just incredible stuff, guys. Sucks I couldn't witness anything or see it, but this is a close second!!
Great shots. Thanks for posting. Guess that NASA and Intrepid wanted few spotters to witness or they would have lifted the Shuttle when more people are around. Now where will they store the SCA until it departs and Enterprise must wait for the barge. In the future. A DVD will be released showing the final journey of Enterprise. A similar DVD was made of the British Concorde's final voyage. Everything boils down to $$$; that's why Enterprise will be hidden in a pavilion which cannot be seen unless tickets are purchased!
The SCA is behind the de-icing tent. You can just barely see the nose of it. Your best shot of seeing it is from HoBe from the bridge. The shuttle is under the tent and will be there till it gets
moved to the barge.
Another words no point in taking a drive over there at this point it seems?
here are a few of my shots from this morning.

I was invited but I was still tired from the Manassas airshow. Had a good time but needs some rest
Awesome shots!
Still going through photo's from this mornings detachment. Here are a couple more.

Outstanding coverage, Mark, Eric. I wish I could be there with you :-(
Really great stuff everyone.
Here's my theory about why NASA decided to remove Enterprise at midnight Sunday. They didn't want a swarm of spotters like us all-over the area; perhaps overflowing the VanWyck and the parking lots. Instead, just like they did when they hoisted-up the Concorde, they invited only members of the press, some PA and Intrepid officials and TV news media. They have no use for spotters like us as we already know when we get chased-away so often at the airports. Today's Daily News has a nice photo of the procedure, so we know the press got invited. It would have been nice if we were told the projected time. Doing this at midnight is further proof that they didn't want us around. My last comment is about the SCA. Has it departed yet? I think it will fly direct to Cape Canaveral to pick-up the final shuttle for transport to LAX and then return to its home base at Dryden AFB. Maybe we'll get some photos then.
The story in the paper said they did it at night because the forecast winds were going to be lower. There is a wind limit when they lift it with the cranes.
Hey speedbird you could have come out no one was stopping you. NASA guys even came up to talk with us. Thanked us for coming out, told us we did great work and to enjoy the show. I pretty sure it was because of the winds.
I don't think there is any organization that really plans things around the possible presence of enthusiasts like that. What beef would they have against us? We shouldn't be so paranoid or high horse as to think such a thing.
I believe the move was strictly weather related. The conditions that night/morning were very favorable. In my opinion I think they did it at night specifically to prevent traffic congestion on the Van Wyke and the service road. Even at that wee of the morning folks were still stopping, and one cabbie demolished his cab by rear ending a spectator on the north bound Van Wyke. Folks were coming and going all night taking photos, but only a few die hards stuck it out (Eric, Ira, myself, and a couple of others). Hats off to Eric for sticking it out. Manny............wish you could have been there enjoying the action.
