UPDATED: 12:16 pm EDT July 31, 2008

At least seven people have been killed in a small plane crash in Owatonna, Minn.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the plane crashed at or near the city's airport Thursday morning. Heavy weather was moving through the area at the time.

Cory said authorities believe the plane was en route from Atlantic City, N.J., but she cautioned that the information was preliminary. [Full Article]

Not a Learjet...a Hawker 800...if you follow Flight Aware and the news reports it was ECJ81...they had a Hawker 800 going from ACY-OWA this morning, due around that time. But until someone officially confirms this surmise, do not take it as gospel.

The tail numbers is presumably N818MV.

N818MV was confirmed via the FAA Preliminary report.
It's a shame what happened, my condolences go out to those on board, and also to all those at East Coast Jets who have to deal with the consequences. They are good people there, it's was a sad day yesterday. What wont help investigators is the fact this was an uncontrolled field, so there are no tower tapes, and probably no surveillance (sp?) cameras to assist the investigators.

i only overheard this on CNN yesterday morning while getting groceries. i was detached from the outside world where i was staying the past few days. from what i heard i'm assuming the a/c went down on account of the "severe wx" that was reported in the area, and it wouldn't surprise me to read eventually it was microburst-induced windsheer. i just now am back at my computer so i'm just now looking for the NTSB prelim report.

At 1455z which was about right about the incident time, here was the ASOS report
KOWA 311515Z AUTO 22012KT 10SM VCTSRA SCT021 BKN037 BKN050 18/17 A2986 RMK AO2 P0002 LTG DSNT E THRU SW
KOWA 311455Z AUTO 17006KT 10SM RA SCT018 SCT029 BKN037 19/17 A2983 RMK AO2 P0009 LTG DSNT E THRU S
KOWA 311435Z AUTO 18003KT 10SM -VCTSRA SCT038 SCT049 BKN100 18/16 A2985 RMK AO2 P0005 LTG DSNT ALQDS

...they were shooting the ILS 30 to OWA. So there was a slight tailwind. An hour before though winds were reported 220 @ 40kts Gusts to 52kts. The severe storm passed that airport about 45 mins before they arrived.

Just an update on this. The jet originated out of ABE, and today's (Monday) Allentown Morning Call had an article updating the story. As I said, it departed out of ABE, with a stop in Atlantic City to pick up passengers. AN NTSB member told reporters that the aircraft touched down briefly on the runway, then apparently added power and attempted to go around. The right wing struck an "8-foot-high antenna" (from the description, it sounds like the localizer antenna) approximately 1,000 feet past the end of the runway before crashing.

This would make sense, East Coast Jets is based in ABE. As for hitting the antennae, the day it happened, I tuned into the local tv-news station online (KARE i believe it was) and they had a chopper overflying recording the area. The far left hand side of the localizer antennae was broken off, and clearly seen in their coverage.
