Ex-TWA Flight Attendants Say They’ll Cross American Airlines Picket Lines
I say bring them back! Sure, she might be 85 years old now and not quite as desirable, but let me enjoy it while I can, ok?
While American Airlines and their flight attendants are in negotiations over contracts overseen by the National Mediation Board, a St Louis-based group of ex-TWA flight attendants called Coalition for Union Principles told the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) that their members were willing to cross the picket line should the American flight attendants go out on strike.
Coalition spokesperson Nancy McGwire was quoted as saying “(Ex-TWA flight attendants) want to resume the careers that were stolen from them by a renegade union.” In the acquisition of TWA by American, the TWA flight attendants were put the bottom of the APFA seniority list that meant when lay offs were made, a flight attendant with 40 years of seniority of TWA was let go before a flight attendant who was hired a month before the acquisition.
The Coalition said the ex-TWA group “has no loyalty to the union they blame for ending their careers.” The ex-TWA group will gladly step into work should the American union members walk off the job.

APFA made the most foolish decision of all when they unilaterally acted to strip all former TWA flight attendants of all of their seniority and place them at the bottom of the seniority list. This action disrespected the value of seniority and the work that we do regardless of the carrier who employs us. The result was to disrespect themselves and F/A’s everywhere. This non-union mentality put us first in line to be laid off in a reduction in force, and reduce the workforce they did. By July 2003, every single former TWA flight attendant was on the street while TWA’s planes and other assets continue to work for the benefit of others. If APFA ever hopes to rehabilitate their reputation of being a company sweetheart in the labor community, they have a long way to go to repair the damage done by their short-sighted actions.
The TWA flight attendants will fly.
