1993: The 1,000th Boeing 747 rolls off the assembly line, 26 years after the program was launched.
1989: Flights began carrying about 8,000 East German refugees who were given permission to leave Hungary. Posing as tourists, they promptly announced they were going to remain in West Germany upon arrival.
1976: British Airways Flight 476, a Hawker Siddeley Trident 3B collided mid-air with Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 550, a Douglas DC-9 killing all 176 people aboard both aircraft. The accident was blamed on Air Traffic Control, with 5 controllers being indicted, and only one found guilty. He was sentenced to 7 years, but served less than two.
1976: TWA flight 355, a Boeing 727 flying from LaGuardia to O’Hare, was hijacked on takeoff by five Croatian terrorists, claiming they had a bomb on board and another in Grand Central Terminal. Making stops in Gander, Newfoundland and Reykjavik, Iceland, before the terrorists surrendered in Paris, France, where their aircraft bomb was determined to be fake. The bomb in Grand Central Terminal was real, however, and killed a police officer during dismantling.
